The basic loop
Write
Type anything into the page. Tasks, notes, client context, half-thoughts. No project to select, no template to fill out. One page per account — everything goes here.
Mark
Tag lines as you write them — or come back and triage later. Four tags: [now] [later] [assign] [park]. Case-insensitive, works immediately after the checkbox.
Track
Press Ctrl+E or click the TIMER ▶ pill in the nav bar to start timing the currently selected line. The nav bar shows the running clock and task name. Press Ctrl+E again or click ■ to stop.
Today
Press Ctrl+G or hit the Today button to see all four priority tag buckets at once — counts per quadrant, your full [now] list, and a warning if it's grown past five. The Today button itself shows the current [now] count (e.g. "Today · 3") and turns amber past five. When you clear the last [now] item, the button briefly shows a ✓ — a small moment of acknowledgement that the list is actually empty.
Writing and formatting
# Heading
Project. The top-level grouping. Time Log and Today both read this as the project name. Rename it any time — historical time entries keep the name they were logged under.
## Heading
Activity. A phase or workstream inside the project. Discovery, Build, Review — whatever makes sense for your work.
plain line
A task. No syntax required. Any line can be timed, tagged, or checked off.
[ ] / [x]
Checkbox. Click to toggle. Checked lines render struck-through and faded. Move to Done files them in one step.
Name |
Client or person tag. Anything before a pipe renders in amber and groups your Time Log. Acme | review proposal — "Acme" becomes the group.
- bullet
Bullet list. Start a line with - for a rendered bullet. Indents automatically — wrapped text hangs to the text edge, not back under the dot. Good for notes, context, and sub-points that aren't tasks.
> quote
Blockquote. Start with > for an indented callout — useful for decisions, context, or things to revisit.
---
Divider. Three dashes on their own line renders a horizontal rule. Good for separating days or sections.
click line
Edit mode. Click any rendered line to edit as raw text. Click away to render again. Alt+↑/↓ moves lines up and down. Ctrl+Z/Y for undo/redo.
# collapse
Click the chevron next to any H1 heading to collapse everything under it — tasks, H2s, all content — showing only the heading. Click again to expand. A subtle vertical line in the left gutter shows what belongs to the section — it disappears when collapsed, reappears on expand. Collapse all in the nav bar folds every section at once.
Ctrl+E
Start / stop timer on the currently selected line. No line selected — does nothing.
Ctrl+G
Open / close Today modal.
Ctrl+S
Force immediate sync / save. Normally autosaves on pause — use this when you want it now.
Ctrl+,
Open burger menu.
Ctrl+/ Cmd+/
Collapse / expand all sections. Same as the Collapse all button in the nav bar — if any section is expanded, collapses all; if all collapsed, expands all. Works on both Windows/Linux (Ctrl) and Mac (Cmd). Layout-independent — matches the / character regardless of keyboard layout.
Priority tags and the Today view
[now]
Urgent + Important. Do it today. The Today view lists all [now] lines and warns you if there are more than five. If everything is now, nothing is.
[later]
Important, not urgent. Schedule it. Before it quietly becomes urgent and ruins your Thursday. The weekly review (coming) will surface what's been here too long.
[assign]
Urgent, not important. Delegate it. It matters — just not to you personally, right now. Tag it, send it on.
[park]
Neither. Someday. Maybe never. That's a legitimate answer. Parked things don't clutter your Today view.
position rule
Priority tags only work immediately after the checkbox — [ ] [now] Name | task — not anywhere else in the line. A tag placed mid-line or at the end won't be counted in Today and won't render as a chip. This keeps the tag on the left margin where it's easiest to scan at a glance.
[park] + done
Parked items keep their checkbox. A [park] line can still be checked off — the priority tag and the checkbox are fully independent. Parking removes a task from Today; checking it off marks it done. Both can happen on the same line.
Today button
Opens the quadrant board. Four counts — one per tag. Your full [now] list below. Everything else stays in the note where you wrote it.
Timer and Time Log
Start
Click a line to select it, then press Ctrl+E or click the ▶ pill in the nav bar. The timer always starts on the line your cursor is on — if no line is selected, it says so rather than silently timing something else. The nav bar shows the running clock and task name inline. The pill turns to ■.
Stop
Press Ctrl+E again or click ■ in the nav bar pill. The entry logs immediately. The nav bar briefly shows "Xh Xm logged · Client" then clears. Pause and Reset are not available — start and stop are the only two states.
Time Log
Every stopped entry appears in the Time Log, grouped by the client name before the pipe. Totals per group in mono. Copy button copies the full group — ready to paste onto an invoice or into a spreadsheet.
No pipe?
Lines without a Name | tag group under Untitled in the Time Log. Still tracked, still copyable — just not attributed to a specific client.
Done pile and Move to Done
[ ] → [x]
Click a checkbox to mark a task done. It renders struck-through and faded in place — still visible, not gone. Doesn't move until you ask it to.
Move to Done
Files all checked tasks under a # Done heading at the bottom of the note in one step. Undoable with Ctrl+Z. Good end-of-day habit — clears visual noise without deleting anything. (Was called "Cleanup" in earlier versions.)
Sync, history, and your data
Sync
Saves automatically every time you pause typing. The status strip warns if sync hasn't happened in 20+ minutes or a snapshot is overdue. Burger drawer shows "Last snapshot: X ago" at all times. If you're offline, changes save locally and sync when you reconnect.
Snapshots
Taken automatically at local midnight for Free accounts (15-day retention). Pro accounts get one every 3 hours (30-day retention, plus one per month for 12 months). Open History from the burger menu to browse and restore any snapshot.
Restore
History is restore-only — you pick a snapshot and it becomes your current note. Your most recent version is always safe before a restore. You can undo immediately after if you change your mind.
Your data
Plain text, always. Copy your note and paste it anywhere — you lose nothing. We don't train on your content. Export your Time Log via the Copy button anytime. Downloadable CSV export coming in Pro.
AI Tidy
✦ Tidy
Click the ✦ button to send your note to Claude. It fixes spelling, removes exact duplicates, and makes vague tasks more actionable. Every heading, tag, checkbox, and pipe is preserved exactly where you left it — the structure is never touched.
What it does
Cleans prose. Sharpens task language. Removes lines that are word-for-word duplicates. Does not reorder, reorganize, or remove anything that isn't an exact duplicate.
What it won't do
It will not move your headings, merge your projects, retag your priorities, or make decisions about your work. If a change looks wrong, a diff is shown before applying — reject it or undo with Ctrl+Z.
Rate limit
40 uses per day per account on the free tier. Enough for a few passes a day — not a replacement for writing.
